The Quantum Physics of Talk

The mysterious malady I was struck with last week that seemed to have both physical and emotional components has passed without aspirin, anti-depressants, or surgery.    It was treated with one part poetry, one part private dance party (compliments of Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews), and an exceptionally dynamic monthly women’s dialogue.

I didn’t want to go, feeling un-presentable and with nothing of interest to offer, but after a year of meeting monthly with this small group of women, I have come to trust the form.  And sure enough, sometime during the few hours we spent together my heart opened up. I saw others deeply and felt seen by them.

In this quantum physics of talk, each woman’s story holds a piece of our own.  We don’t judge or give advice. We tell our own unrehearsed story. We listen to others and something happens.  It’s a non-intellectual, spontaneous living circle, a place where I can question my own assumptions, become aware of my coping mechanisms, be honest and vulnerable and ask questions.  Should I be doing more? Or less?  Is a small life enough?  What’s the point? How can I be more playful?

I’m learning to value my sensitivity to the subtle, to address what makes me shake.  Hits me in the gut.  A cue to speak up.  Risk it.  Progress! Emotional bumps that used to take hours to unravel and process can now move along in about 10 minutes.  I go to dialogue for the insight, the laughter and goosebumps.  I go like my life depends on it.  I have no rule book for this late-life puberty I’m in.

I went thinking something was wrong with me and left thinking not so much.

How great that this kind of meet-up is so helpful. I’m afraid my tiredness comes from being older and not having the energy I use to have to entertain 17 people! For me, REST is the Best Medicine…But, I think it is terrific that you have this forum—-PLUS your wonderful Talent for writing, my dear.

Rest is the first/best medicine for me too. Fatigue can often affect my emotional outlook which can require a differnt kind of remedy. I am still fatigued but my spirits have uplifted which in turn can be a good step in affecting my fatigue for the better.
